Elden Ring Topped NPD's May 2022 Charts

The NPD Group has released its data for video game software and hardware sales in the United States for the month of May 2022 (courtesy of NPD Group analyst Mat Piscatella on Twitter) and there's been some interesting shuffling around where the best-selling games of the month are concerned. LEGO Star Wars: Skywalker Saga , which topped charts last month , has fallen to second place, while Elden Ring has climbed back up to first place again. It is still the best-selling game of the year, though that's not a surprise to anyone.

Switch tops hardware, Elden Ring returns to number one slot on software chart - NPD May 2022

The NPD has released its May 2022 report covering video game hardware, software, and accessory sales in the US. According to the NPD, total videogame industry spending declined 19% year-over-year to $3.7 billion. May 2022 had the lowest monthly spending total since February 2020's reported $3.5 billion. Year-to-date, consumers have spent $21.9 billion across the board, a decline of 10% yoy. Subscription content was the only category for the month that showed yoy growth.

There is a popular thought that, due to several delays, 2022 isn't going to be the bumper year for video games that was predicted (following several delays in 2021 due to Covid). Following a refreshingly different Pokemon game and clear Game of the Year frontrunner, Elden Ring, we hit a rough patch and the rest of the year without Starfield or Breath of the Wild 2 seems a little bleak.
