The original Overwatch's days seem to be numbered as a standalone product as it will integrate with Overwatch 2. Speaking in a recent AMA on Reddit , game director Aaron Keller confirmed what Blizzard stated previously when it said the Overwatch and Overwatch 2 clients will merge to avoid fragmenting the player base. "When Overwatch 2 launches on October 4, it will be a replacement for the current Live Service," said Keller.

Overwatch 2 received tons of new information in its June 16th event including Competitive 2.0 changes, Battle Passes , the removal of loot boxes, and more. However, some eagle-eyed fans noticed that Hanamura, currently an Assault map in Overwatch 1 , was designated as an Escort map in the sequel. The closed beta patch notes from April confirmed the removal of all Assault Maps from Quick Play and Competitive rotations.

Despite its share of delays and setbacks, Blizzard Entertainment's Overwatch 2 is now going forward with an early access, free-to-play launch. Overwatch Loot Boxes Won't Carry Over Into Overwatch 2

Blizzard Entertainment is changing up its approach significantly with Overwatch 2. It launches into early access on October 4th and, unlike the first game, will be free-to-play. Loot boxes are also going away in favor of a Battle Pass and in-game store with Virtual Currency to purchase cosmetics.
